What is similar and different to The River Thames and The Amazon River?

Image
An interesting lesson taking a tour down the Thames to see why it is important to London and why. Using aerial photos to identify the similarities and differences. Some of the children were not impressed that the Thames provides some of the drinking water for London, even though it has been purified.  Then, they watched a clip about the Amazon River and how this is used. The children were fascinated with the colour of the water as well as the pink dolphins and piranhas that live there.  When they had completed their work, they recapped using 4 grid references to find shapes and pictures in a grid.

What is flooding and how does it affect us?

The lesson started like any other with out sticky knowledge, what features of a river can you remember and what is a river?  The children then looked at different pictures of flooding around the world. Then, they watched a clip demonstrating how flooding can happen in the upper course and how this flows down into the river causing its banks to burst or overflow. This causes the flood plains to become flooded as the land cannot absorb all of the water. Once this happens, it can cause devastation to land, houses and properties. In some cases it can cause death to both humans and animals alike.  Once the rain has stopped, the water recedes back again.
