Let’s visit Antarctica

 Today the children went on a virtual tour of Antarctica: the coldest desert and nearly twice the size of Australia. 

They learnt how scientists need to plan weeks before they embark on their journey. They need at least 30 pieces of equipment to ensure they have everything they need as there are no shops. once there they stay in research stations where they have everything they need to survive such harsh conditions. When the weather is good they go out on many expeditions as well as researching many subjects such as the magnetic field. 

A big thank you to one student who brought in pieces of a salt basin from Portugal which we learnt about a few weeks ago. So light to hold and although the children were told not to taste them, one did and confirmed it was very salty!

 Today, Year 4 began to explore how life in Britain changed after the Romans took over. Did you know that Britain was Roman for 300 years? Britain was quite peaceful in this time, and many Celts became Roman citizens. They even spoke Latin! Year 4 learned that the Romans made huge changes in Britain, including building better roads, introducing flushing toilets, and even bringing garlic, celery, and grapes into Britain! Author Visit - Peter J Murray

Today, KS2 were treated to a morning with Peter J Murray - author of several books, including the amazing Mokee Joe series.  Pete told us how Mokee Joe came about - a simple game of hide and seek with his children that became more scary! We were introduced to the characters that appear in Mokee Joe - the good, the bad and the ones in between! We discovered the characters of Hudson Brown, Molly and Ashley - who try to bring Mokee Joe down.  The stories were set in different parts around the world and each bringing more adventure, problems and villains with it.   The children were captivated and laughed, clapped, gasped and were in awe of the stories.  They were a credit! Pete said that they were "an amazing audience" and that he would love to come back and work tell them more of his stories!  There is still time to send in some money for books - £5 each / a complete set of 6 for £30 (he has said that there will be no more Mokee Joe's).  Please send any ...

Computing - Introduction

In today's computing, Year 4 were introduced to the topics that will be covered this year. They were excited to discover that they would be learning about photo editing in addition to further Scratch programming and even some physical computing using the Micro:bits. In the lesson we talked about the importance of Computing in our everyday lives and thought about what the subject meant to us. We then considered how we use Computing now and how this might change in the future: can you think of any jobs that don't need some elements of IT skill? Finally we spoke about staying safe online, and considered some rules for the Computing classroom. We thought really carefully about this and developed some ideas around what is acceptable use. We are looking forward to seeing where our Computing journey leads us this year!
