How are deserts formed?
After recapping the difference between weather and climate the children looked at pictures of various deserts. Some of the deserts showed pillars, mushroom rocks, salt basins and ridge rocks. One thing they all have in common (except for salt basins) is they are formed from erosion. Erosion is when pieces of the Earth’s surface are moved from one place to another by water, water or wind. Erosion happens very slowly. Thus, the rocks, sand and wind wear away the land.
Salt basins (Atacama Desert) are formed when water evaporates and leaves salt behind.
