Which region do you live in?

 A really interesting lesson looking at the different regions of England. Do you know which region you live in? If not, ask your child, hopefully they will remember. 

As part of our study about the United Kingdom we looked into what regions are any why England is split upon into regions. Mostly, it is for administration purposes to make it easier for the Government to find out data and statistics of an area easily. After the children had labelled the regions they began to debate which region is the most prosperous. Some very interesting discussions ranging from, “Well it must be London as the Queen lived there.”  Another answer , “I think  it is Lincolnshire as it sounds posh.”

What is Europe?

 This week, the children have been using atlases to identify where Europe is in the world and the countries which are found there. This is what the children identified.  Europe is a continent that we live in and it is one of the smaller continents.  Parts of Turkey and Russia can be found in both Europe and Asia?  Some of the countries in Europe are land locked. The largest country is Russia and the smallest country is Vatican City. Italy is shaped like a boot.  Lots of people live in Europe. Europe is in the Northern Hemisphere.  Well done year 4 some amazing conversations and observations.

Let’s visit Antarctica

 Today the children went on a virtual tour of Antarctica: the coldest desert and nearly twice the size of Australia.  They learnt how scientists need to plan weeks before they embark on their journey. They need at least 30 pieces of equipment to ensure they have everything they need as there are no shops. once there they stay in research stations where they have everything they need to survive such harsh conditions. When the weather is good they go out on many expeditions as well as researching many subjects such as the magnetic field.  A big thank you to one student who brought in pieces of a salt basin from Portugal which we learnt about a few weeks ago. So light to hold and although the children were told not to taste them, one did and confirmed it was very salty!
