 Today, the children recapped the difference between England and The United Kingdom. From there, they looked at The British Isles. The British Isles are a group of islands in the North Atlantic Ocean off the north-western coast of the continent of Europe. The islands consist of  Britain, Ireland, Wales, Scotland Northern Ireland and Ireland. Geographically speaking The Isle of Man and the Channel Islands are also part of this but they are both self-governing British Crown Dependency with their own government and laws. 

 After missing last week's science lesson, due the the funeral, we had lots of catching up to do today! We worked really hard to recall what each of the organs in our digestive system does, before focusing on the mouth and teeth. We considered what the role of teeth is, discussing what might happen if we didn't have any teeth!  We then learned that we have 4 types of teeth: incisors, canines, premolars and molars, labelling a diagram and explaining functions, before creating our own little book of teeth!

 This term Year 4 are looking at Mosaics in their Art lessons, during the first lesson the children created fact files all about Roman Mosaics and since we have designed our own mosaic template and have began to add our paper mosaic tiles. 

In today's Computing lesson, Year 4 have been exploring how the internet is formed from a network of networks. We discovered that the Internet and the World Wide Web are two different things, and that the Internet is connected by lots of routers. We then made our own routes through a puzzle version of the Internet to demonstrate how routers work.

 This week the children were learning more about Europe. They used atlases to find the biggest and smallest counties as well as discussing how people might travel to Europe from other countries or continents. Some of the children told us about their holidays and what their surrounding environments  were like. They also looked at the population and counties which are the most northerly. And a postcard was rewarded to this young lady for two excellent lessons in a row. Well done. 😊

In English this term we have been exploring The Lost Thing by Shaun Tan. As well as reading the story and beginning to write our own versions, we have also made posters to advertise ‘The Federal Department of Odds and Ends’ mentioned in the book. We enjoyed using our creativity to create lost things and using rhetorical questions to engage our audience. 

  Year 4 had a fantastic lesson, building on their understanding of the growth of the Roman Empire. We now know from our last lesson that Julius Caesar was unsuccessful in conquering Britain. 100 years later, Emperor Claudius considered doing the same. Playing the role of advisers, we explored the 'pro's and 'con's of invading Britain. For example, if Claudius could accomplish what Caesar couldn't, it would perhaps establish him as a more effective leader. After discussing our ideas, children had the chance to meet Claudius for themselves and try to give him advice!
